The Parabola
Quadratic Relations are represented through parabolas. A parabola is a curved-shaped line.
Parts of a Parabola

Key Terms
-
Direction of Opening
- A parabola can open up (smile) or down (frown).
2. Vertex
- The maximum or minimum point on the graph. It is the point where the graph changes direction.
- Labelling: (x,y)
3. Optimal Value
- The highest or lowest point also known as the y-value of the vertex.
- Labelling: y=#
4. Axis of Symmetry
- Divides the parabola in half. It is along the y-axis but is known as the x-value of the vertex.
- Labelling: x=#
5. Y-intercept
- Where the parabola crosses the y-axis.
- Labelling: (0,#)
6. X-intercepts/Zeroes/Roots
- Where the parabola crosses the x-axis. Can be one or two points depending on where the parabola is on the graph.
- Labelling: (#,0) OR (#,0) and (#,0)
